Are you worried that your whole department or project will fall apart the moment you need to take time off work?  Well, maybe you should be worried!  Have you developed your team so they can continue to work effectively in your absence?  In my years working on projects in various businesses, I’ve worked in many teams – and here are the three qualities that that the best performing teams had instilled in them by their leaders.

  1. Open Communication. Team members could talk openly and felt comfortable sharing their thoughts, challenges, and ideas. This developed trust, ensured alignment with goals, and enabled swift problem resolution. Promoting this culture has helped everyone on the team, particularly the leaders it stems from.
  2. Developing Versatility.  There was continuous investment in training and development, enhancing skills and versatility. Teams that are equipped in this way can more easily adapt to unexpected changes and missing teammates.  Investing in your team’s resilience is never money or time wasted.
  3. Embrace Agility and Innovation. Teams that are motivated to think creatively and propose innovative solutions adapt to changes incredibly quickly. They are also – often – fearless in the face of adversity, willing to take calculated risks and aspire to loftier targets. Rewarding innovative approaches creates a team capable of overcoming challenges and ensuring business continuity.

By building these traits into your teams, you can take time off without worrying about the worst happening.  And yes, your team will be high-performing whenever you’re present, too.  Give it a try.
