The Worst PMO

The worst PMOs are the ones that can tell you what the process is, and insist you follow it, but can’t explain why the process exists or its value to you or the business.

These types always become angry and defensive when challenged, and may regard you as difficult for pressing them. Let’s be clear though – that’s their problem. You’re exposing their weakness. Once they identify this they can go one of two routes:
1. Angrily shut you down.
2. Offer to get informed, to come back later and share what they learn.

You should welcome the second option – it’s a sign the PMO hasn’t attached their ego to the work, and is prepared to discuss openly and maybe grow a little.

It doesn’t mean things will change, their hands may be tied. But an ability and willingness to engage in the discussion without defensiveness is a good sign.

And if you have a PMO that can explain the process, why it exists, the value it adds, awareness of the challenges or limitations, and willingness to champion changes where there is a compelling case… well… you’ve hit the gold mine. Give them a promotion 😂

If you read this far without knowing what a PMO is – thank you for your patience! And now here’s your reward! I asked Lindsay Scott from House of PMO about what PMOs are. Here’s what she had to say:
