I’m going to share a secret with you about my jobseeking process and I’m not sure how you’re going to take it…

Most people see the steps to getting their next job as linear. They decide they want a job, they look for a job, they may get a job, and the process ends.

For me, it’s not linear – it’s cyclical. The process never ends.

Even when I’m happily employed, the process continues.

I may not be actively looking for new opportunities – but I’ll meet with recruiters, I’ll look for the skills that are desirable in the market, I’ll keep my CV/resume 30 minutes from being ready to send, and I’ll keep on building a killer network that alerts me to opportunities – often before they even get published to a job page.

I’ve turned this approach into a framework called the Project Management Career Growth Cycle which features seven steps called “The 7 E’s“:

  • Explore – I investigate the market to find the skills I need to get the best opportunities.
  • Enhance – Carry out a skills gap analysis and see where I need to invest time in developing new skills.
  • Elevate – Continue to learn and evolve my approach to crafting a winning CV/resume.
  • Engage – I begin the job search and application process – armed with experience, key lessons and
  • Excel – I practice challenging interview techniques so that I’m ready when interview day arrives; followed by positioning myself to negotiate the job offers I receive.
  • Emerge – I explore career paths beyond project management.
  • Evolve – I forge a powerful personal brand and expand my network to open doors to the many unadvertised job opportunities I would otherwise never see.

If you want to learn more about my approach, I’ve packaged it all into a course called Find Your Next – Or First – Project Management Job. You can take the next big move in your career by checking out the details here:
